How to Multiply by a One-Digit Number

This post will teach you how to multiply any number by a one-digit number.

Multiplication Terms

The numbers that are multiplied are called FACTORS and the answer is called the PRODUCT.

The FACTORS are written on top of each other. Normally, the bigger number is written on the top, and it’s called the MULTIPLICAND and below, we have the smaller number, which is called the MULTIPLIER.

multiply

Multiplication Steps:

  1. Multiply the multiplicand by each of the numbers of the multiplier, moving from right to left. The units of the product are written below the line.
  2. The tens place of each product are added to the next product.

For example, 561 x 3

We start by multiplying 3 x 1 = 3. We write the 3 under the line.

Now, we multiply 3 x 6 = 18. Here, we write the 8 below the line and we save the 1 from the tens place and we will add it later to the next multiplication.

The last step is to multiply 3 x 5 = 15. We have to add on the 1 that we saved from the last product, so 15 + 1 = 16. There’s nothing else to do, so we write the 16 below the line.

The final answer of the multiplication is: 561 x 3 = 1683.
