An incentive can be useful at times to motivate positive behaviors in children. Be it developing a routine, doing one’s daily chores, or simply falling in love with math. Let’s see what Michelle from the blog Powered By Mom has to say about her experience and how she used Smartick as an incentive for her family to overcome math anxiety.
An Incentive to Overcome Math Anxiety
Michelle is a mom to a third grader and finds it extremely important to keep her daughter engaged in everything she is learning in school. So when the family had to move and her daughter started in a new school, Michelle found that the new math curriculum was much more advanced. They had to quickly jump into division, more complex math equations, and memorizing multiplication tables. As both parents work, ”Since my husband and I never seem to have enough time to explore these new math problems with her and hiring a tutor is expensive, Smartick has been helpful in easing math anxiety these past few weeks,” says Michelle in her blog post, Smartick Makes Learning Math Fun.
Smartick is an innovative online method for learning math for children between the ages 4 and 14. Other than the daily 15 minutes of mandatory math sessions, a child can also access the Virtual World filled with gamification elements that help reinforce cognitive skills such as memory, perception, reasoning, and attention.
Daily Sessions, Tutorials, Competitions & the Virtual World!
After filling in your details, signing up, and registering the student, you get to enjoy the wonder that is your child or student creating an avatar of themselves. As Michelle says, ‘Never underestimate the excitement of a child who gets to create their own avatar! There’s just something about it that they go nuts over. Go grab a coffee and sit down with a book because this will occupy your little one for a while!’
Michelle and her daughter especially love the Virtual World aspect of Smartick. ‘The Virtual World not only has a little home they can visit and decorate but it has a library, gym, store, and even a tree house.’
The child gets to collect ‘ticks’ for every math session they complete. These they can use in the Virtual World to purchase things to dress up their avatars and even buy pets! ‘This has been a great incentive to keep my daughter logging in as often as she can so that she can continue earning her “allowance.”’
Smartick has a very user-friendly design and is easy to navigate. Michelle’s eight-year-old logs in by herself to do her daily 15-minute sessions and then explores the Virtual World or watches a few tutorials (at her mom’s suggestion, of course).
Each child gets their own personalized curriculums based on their level and pace. The daily sessions change as a child acquires new skills, continually challenging him/her as he/she progresses. Michelle especially likes the aspect of the program where if problems are solved incorrectly, the student has the option to go back afterward and try again. This builds confidence and drives motivation.
‘This program has eased the math anxiety my daughter has felt lately so I am one happy camper,’ says Michelle.
