Ones, Tens, Hundreds. Learn How They Are Used

In today’s post, we will review Ones, Tens, and Hundreds and examples of how they are used.

Ones

One is the smallest natural number. We are going to represent the ones’ place with unit cubes:

ones

Ones

Tens

Let’s look at a bigger number:

Ones

That’s a lot of unit cubes, right? Imagine how many there would be if we had an even bigger number!
Because of this, we use rods, which groups the 10 units into rods of 1 ten:

We are going to represent the number 18 using rods and units.

ones

A ten is a greater value than a one. A ten is composed of 10 ones. Here are other examples:

tens, ones

Hundreds

The same thing happens with 100. For example, look at how the number 101 would be represented with rods and units:

tens, ones

Therefore, we use a flat which is 10 rods (10 tens), which is the same as 100 units ( 100 ones):

hundred, tens, ones

hundred, tens, ones

Positional Value

Now that we are familiar with ones, tens, and hundreds, we will examine their place value.
We are going to organize the numbers in a table, following these instructions:

  • In the left-hand column, we write the complete number.
  • In the columns labelled H, T, and O, starting with the last digit, place it in the ones’ column, making sure to only put one digit in each cell.
  • In the last column, we express the number as the sum of its placeholder values.

hundred, tens, ones

Some teachers say that 10 items in a bundle are called a unit
Am getting confused coz according what I learned from different schools up to my college level, a unit is an individual item and in the case of 10 items it means I have ten units
